About Asthma Care

What is Asthma?

Asthma is a health condition that can cause severe problems in the pulmonary and respiratory systems in the body. Simply speaking, the complications caused by asthma can range from just shortness of breath to more severe afflictions that can damage the lungs, trachea and other parts of the respiratory system.

Causes of Asthma

Asthma might be tricky to deal with. In accordance with the child’s medical history, the symptoms might need to be diagnosed accordingly to arrive at a certain conclusion. Various tests need to be done to rule out other potential causes of symptoms. Quite a few childhood conditions can have symptoms like those caused by asthma. In a breathing disorder like asthma, these conditions further complicate diagnosis since they also commonly occur along with asthma. So, the situation can be a combination of asthma and other factors, just asthma or other health conditions apart from asthma.

Causes for asthma during childhood are not fully understood. Some factors could be the following:

  • Genetic causes to develop allergies
  • Parents with asthma
  • Airway infections at a very early age
  • Environmental factors like smoke, air pollution

Symptoms of Asthma

If the immune system is overly sensitive towards certain triggers but the reaction is delayed, it might be difficult to pinpoint the trigger as well. Some common triggers can include the following, but are not limited to them and can differ from child to child:

  • Viral infections like common cold
  • Exposure to air pollutants
  • Certain organic particles allergies
  • Physical activity
  • Weather changes or cold air

Asthma symptoms can happen without visible triggers as well. Some common symptoms include:

  • Frequent coughing that becomes worse in cold air or during physical activity
  • Whistling or wheezing sound when exhaling
  • Shortness of breath
  • Chest congestion or tightness

Initial treatment depends on how severe the asthma is. The goal is to keep it under control and let the body heal itself. There is long-term as well as short-term medications. Please consult with your doctor on details of medication.
