About Developmental Monitoring and Screening

What is Developmental Monitoring?

Developmental monitoring is a process in which the growth and change of your child is observed over time and if the typical developmental milestones in playing, learning, speaking, behaving, and moving are being met for the child. Family members who are either directly related to the child (parents, grandparents), early childhood providers, and other caregivers can be a part of this process. There is a small checklist to check if your child is meeting the requirements or not. If not, you can always speak to your doctor.

What is Developmental Screening?

Developmental screening on the other hand goes much deeper in its observation and analysis of the development of your child. There will be a small test that will be taken by the child and the parent or guardian might have to fill up a small questionnaire regarding the child’s development, which includes language, movement, thinking, behavior, and emotions. Developmental screening can be done by a doctor or nurse, but other certified professionals can also carry out this process as and when needed.

Why is it important and needed?

Monitoring and screening, when done regularly and properly can aid in providing a good environment for the child to grow up in. There can be developmental delays in many children, and they might just go unnoticed. There might even be behavior concerns that can go under the radar but later can resurface as potential problems. Regular monitoring and screening can help children get better adjusted to their surroundings, community, school or neighborhood.

Screening tests and monitoring milestones can be availed of in detail from your doctor.
