About Immunization

Immunity is the first line of defense for your overall health and well-being. By default, when one is born, as a child one is exposed to bacteria, viruses, other micro-organisms and quite a few allergens. Based on your genes, you might be naturally resistant to certain diseases and might be prone to suffering from others. But is that the end of the story? No, immunization is a process that comes to your rescue.

What is Immunization?

As a preventative care, vaccination or immunization involves administering a vaccine into the body. The vaccine is aimed at preparing your child’s body to be better equipped to fight off diseases. Based on the body’s physiology, there might be ailments that the immune system can cope with, but certain viruses and bacteria might be just way too strong for the immune system. Vaccines provide a sort of training ground for your immune system and make it ready to face diseases in a much more prepared way.

Why is Immunization important and needed?

You might wonder that new diseases come up all the time. So, how many vaccines are needed? Immunization is done for the most commonly occurring ailments and childhood vaccines are the best example of that. When administered at an early age, vaccines are rather effective and the body gets a much longer time to be better prepared, if or when the actual disease-causing agent is encountered later in life. A flu shot is an example of a vaccine. Some others include:

  • Chickenpox
  • Diphtheria, tetanus and whooping cough
  • Haemophilus influenzae type b
  • Measles, mumps, rubella
  • Polio
  • Pneumococcal
  • Hepatitis A
  • Hepatitis B
